Default 1989 Accord Alternator Tensioner Bolt Needed

Hi guys,

I have a 1989 Accord LXi. 3 months ago I had the water pump replaced. Apparently whoever had the vehicle before me stripped the alternator tensioner belt when they replaced the alternator.

Since then I have been on a search for this bolt since it seems Honda no longer carries any parts for this vehicle. I have also been unsuccessful in finding a replacement from local junkyards in Upstate NY.

Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks.

Joe

Huh? Which bolt/nut are you needing...ps, if I'm close....anything from 86-89 will work....LX, DX or LXi.

Are you talking about the one that is from the "top" bolt of the alt/thru the bracket just below the mast cyl???

That's the one. It tensions the belt.

If you or anyone knows where I can get one please tell me. I am not ready to junk it. If anything I would want to completely restore it.

if its completely useless you may try to run a smaller die down the threads and see if it will take. If its like the 94-97 accords I think you could use a regular bolt from a hardware store like ACE. It may be tricky to get it installed and require a homemade sleeve or something, but I think its doable. Its not doing much that you have to worry about it failing using a bolt from a hardware store.

You might try hondaautomotiveparts in the selection pulldown choose "ENGINE SUB CORD - CLAMP" They have some parts I cant tell if they have what you need.

Is it #4 in the picture? If so, the part number is 31116-PH1-000. It looks like you can get them on OEM parts sites like hondapartsnow.com or majestic honda. Your dealership should be able to order this for you.

PA, yep...that is the little bugger....Make sure #13 is still there as well EDIT: notice that is between the alt and bracket. If you can't find one....

It is possible to get a pry bar on the alt and tension the belt, did this once when I lost the nut and couldn't find one in my garage....Get one from the dealer.....know anybody that can weld a washer to the end of threaded rod, make one as it is only used for tensioning the belt, the upper and lower alt bolts take over from there.

That's the one alright. But Honda says it is no longer available. I have tried junk yards but haven't been able to ocate it since they states they rarely have cars from the 80s any more.

No sure which dealer or site you are going to? I just looked and I can order one for $8.32 from a dealers site (Honda Parts Direct). Then you can try Car-part and search for any 86-89 Accord, try looking for an alternator, this will give you some bone yards that you can then call about getting the tensioner bolt. There is still the idea of making one. Then you might also try "re-threadding" the old one with a die.

And last you can tension the belt with a pry bar, again I've done this before.

Last, I'm going to be getting rid of the 87 some time soon, got rear ended.
