Check DIY forum for instructions on extracting OBD1 flash codes. Trans codes are same procedure except D4 light will flash rather than Check Engine Light.

Post your code/s for help.

good luck

Default finally back again with update

between my 10 year old having her appendix out and then 4 days later developing kidney stones that have not yet passed and will need to be lasered, there has not been much time to get working on my accord. good news is the shifting problem has been resolved solely by cleaning the 1st/2nd solenoid. must have been a little dirt in the passage. works fine now. check engine code is 12 which i believe is exhaust gas recirculation. i have no idea what i need to do fix that. any ideas? i will check the DIY section. maybe there is something there. thnaks for any advice. david

There is an extensive diagnostic procedure to determine whether vacuum supply to actuate valve is missing, valve is stuck open/closed, or possible blockage of EG passages. If you want to DIY, suggest downloading a 90-93 Accord manual to get the diagnostic procedure. See Online Manuals post links in DIY forum.

If EGR passages have never been cleaned, this may be the problem. Howeve, EGR system is complex and can have faults at several locations.

good luck

Default huge downside if fixed promtly?

is there a huge downside if this problem is not promptly fixed and i just live with the light on? i don't have a vacuum tester nor a vacuum maker at my immediate disposal. the light did not go on right away after i reset the system by disconnect the neg battery terminal. only came on after the car was up to temperature. i assume it stays in one mode until temp is reached then tries to open a valve and at that point determines something amiss with a parameter at that setting and throws the code? i will try the easy stuff first, cleaning passages, examining the valve as best i can and then see if that does any good before i chase down some other equipment. maybe autozone or oriellys has those tools in their lending library. thnaks, david

The EGR is enabled when the engine gets to operating temperature.

I would follow the vacuum hoses from the EGR valve to the two EGR controls (solenoid and vacuum control valve). Make sure the vacuum hose hasn't rotted where you would get a vacuum leak.
