Default 1994 Accord EX (Automatic) - Speedometer problem

My 1994 Accord EX speedometer sometimes dies. Occassionally when it dies I see the D4 light flashing. Is this a VSS problem?

It could be the VSS, the wiring, or the computers.

Check for engine and transmission codes. See the common diy thread on top of the gen tech help forum for a how to check cel link.

Does the cruise control work when the speedometer goes out?

I've got the same car with the same problem. My cruise will work even though the speedometer doesn't.

Could not get to check the cruise control. However, today the speedo died again accompanied by the flashing D4 light. D4 continued to flash even after the speedometer recovered. No check engine light at all - any thoughts?

Check for engine and transmission codes. See the common diy thread on top of the gen tech help forum for a how to check cel link. It is the same procedure for the transmission codes.

The codes are stored, so the light doesn't have to be flashing for you to retrieve the codes.

Same thing happened to me 1.5 yrs ago it was VSS. My tac went crazy too during D4 flashing. Same thing started last week again. This time i may buy Honda part. Last one came from Advance or Autozone.

Problem solved. It was vss. As was mentioned by others, speedo fails, d4 flashes and cruise does not engage.

I have a similar issue in my 95 Accord V6. Speedometer stuck at 20MPH, but no flashing D4 light, and cruise control works, therefor the VSS is good. I'm told it's the speedometer circuitry. Playing with the trip odometer reset button seems to make speedo work sometimes as suggested in previous threads...
Anyone know where I can find a schematic?

The 94 Honda shop manual has a partial circuit diagram. It shows pin no's and basic circuits but I suspect there are other items such as power conditioning that might not be shown. Not aware of any detailed circuit diagrams.

Others have had some luck w/ visual detection of defects and resoldering the circuit solder jts.

Shop manual is helpful to enable gauge panel removal. Check DIY forum and youtube also.

good luck
