1996 Honda Accord Stalling Problem
If the timing doesn't look correct, the first thing is to verify the pulley isn't slipping.
There's a layer of hard rubber between the outer pulley & the central "hub" of the pulley. With age & oil, sometimes that comes loose and the outer pulley can slip. Obviously if that has happened, the notches in the rim of that pulley are in the wrong place and you don't want to screw up everything just trying to use those marks.

I used the timing light today but still couldn't see the marks on the pulley, maybe they are gunked up with oil and dirt over the years. However, I let the car idle for over an hour and it seems to be working properly (idles right at 750). I think I just needed to let it idle for a lot longer than 15-30 minutes so the computer could relearn. My fans even finally kicked on around 45 minutes of idling. I then took it out for test drive and all seems to be working, so I assume the timing must be fine with the distributor swap. So bottom line is it looks like the fix was replacing the distributor (most likely the ignition control module in it was bad). Thanks guys for all the helpful inputs!
