Default 1998 Honda Accord (170,000 miles)

When I bought this car, I noticed a small tube about the diameter of a pencil that comes out of the top of the transmission (below the starter) and just hangs over loose near the transmission dip stick.

I am concerned that this is a vacuum tube and the other end is supposed to be plugged into something else. Or is this just a "vent" ?

Here are a pic from the internet (not of my car) but the tube that I was trying to find on the internet to see where the other end is supposed to go.

the tube is just on the left front side. but is lose... like this one.

Your image doesn't show up.

For the automatics (since you mention transmission dipstick), there is a breather tube (#7 in parts diagram) attached to the vent. It should not be plugged at the opposite end of the transmission housing vent.

Redbull's picture is for a 4-cyl, not a V-6. You don't say that either in your post. The transmission on a V-6 car would be on the left, like you said.

On the 1998 4-cyl I owned, that vent hose is held in a bracket so the open end of the hose is pointing downwards towards the transmission case, kinda near the starter. You don't want that hose collecting water when you drive in the rain.
