Does this relay control more than just the fuel pump? I have already posted a lengthy message tonight about my problem and I note the lack of both clicking and fuel pump buzzing. But a breakdown guy said he could detect an electrical feed to the fuel pump.
If this relay controls other things and they work, then I could rule out the relay, couldn't i?

The "main relay" is really 2 relays inside one plastic case. You can't automatically rule this out 'cause it's possible one works & the other doesn't.
One relay is more likely to fail, it's the one that switches power to the fuel pump.
The other relay switches power to the ECU, including the check-engine lamp; and also switches power for most of the solenoids & several sensors.
Finally, without details about your car, it's not possible to be very specific. I think most years, the main relay switches the positive leg of the fuel pump circuit. But there's other electrical connections back there, for example the sender for the fuel gauge. Do you think the breakdown guy was checking the wrong wire?

I now think he had no clue what the five wires at the connector were for. Only one gets 12v when the key is turned and I now know this is for the fuel guage. The positive supply to the pump remains at 0v all the time.
