Is your '96 manual or automatic tranny? Auto tranny cars have a vacuum-operated rear engine mount that can fail. It's supposed to get 'soft' during idle in gear.

The reset lamp does that flashing business as an early warning. Whenit'sactually due based onmiles since last reset, the lamp will stay on.

Reset procedure for the 2004 maintenance lamp:
1 - key off.
2 - press & hold the odometer reset button
3 - turn key on while continuing to hold the reset button
- - don't need to start engine, but key has to be in 'run' position
4 - keep holding the button for a while longer
5 - lamp flashes & finally goes out

If your idle is below 700 rpm, your Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) is probably too dirty to work or failed. If low rpm, check IACV solenoid for electrical function and clean if working.

good luck
