I found this car on saturday for my girlfriend who is looking to purchase it. the backstoy is they car was bought in los angeles 1 month ago from its orginal owner. the current owner has lost his job and cant afford to keep it now. I pulled a carfax and the car checks out clean no problems and the transer of ownership is good. I informed the owner that he needed to take it to the bank since she needs a loan on the car, 4 hours later the owner calls me and tells me that it will not pass smog becasue of an AEM coldair intake. He does not have the funds to fix the vehicle and we have been struggleing to find a car in her price range and have yet to look at a car this clean. I am willing to put the stock intake back on as long as its within reason and he drops the price for my troubles which he has agreed to. my question is should I expect an issue when I go to smog it? should I expect that the exhaust has been tampered with as well? the car is slightly louder then normal but not an exhaust sound. and is the guy telling me the truth about the intake causing the smog to fail or is there a deeper problem he is trying to hide? i talked to a few smog shops and they tell me that if there is no CARB stivker on the intake it will fail a visual test.
How should I handle this?
any suggestions are appreciated, Thanks!
