Default 2000 accord lx v6 vtec 3.0 l

I have just purchased a Honda accord from 2000 it is a nice looking car, but the only issue I am having now is that the RPM'S go way too high when i accelerate, I can go past the redline and some. it scares me cause I feel like it will ruin the motor, so i dont do it much, but I am thinking it needs a new governor or maybe the governor was taken out. Along with this, my gas mpg isnt honda mpg's its more like im driving a jeep wrangler with big tires. I dont know where to look for help So i decided to post here, if you have any suggestions or know anything of this issue please get back to me as soon as you can. thank you.

I wonder if you can get your hands on another tachometer (test-gear that you use in the engine compartment). Verify that the RPM displayed in the cluster is actually correct?

How high do the RPMs go?

Is the CEL on? Stored transmission codes maybe? I would be looking at potential trans slip/flare issues.

There is a pedal on the floor of the car that regulates how fast the engine spins. Maybe the pedal needs a block of wood or something under it so that it isn't pressed so hard.
