Default 2000 and Cooling Fans

Hello!
Last week it was 104 in Georgia, my wife was in traffic and the 2000 4 cyl showed it was getting hot. She took it to the mechanic who said the radiator fan was broken. She took it back today and his assistant said it was the AC fan. Well, I looked at it and the AC fan is doing as it should.

However, the cooling fan was not on so I tap the motor on the back side and it started. It then came on intermittantly. Once it was off and I pushed, just a little,a fan blade and it came on ran for a minute cut off and came back on a little later. The car was just put in the garage from a short trip, 8 miles, and I let it idle with AC on for over 30 minutes. The temp guage never got over the one third mark.

Is it working as it should? I think it is. My mechanic may be trying to pull one or just replace until he thinks it is fixed when nothing is broken. If anything it may be a sensor. What do you experts think?

Flydog.

Love this forum.

When the AC is turned on, both fans should run. So it sounds like you have a bad motor on one of the fans. Especially since you got it to run by hitting it or spinning it.

Another test... AC turned off, key 'ON'. Unplug the fan switch ("sensor") in the thermostat housing. Jumper it's wire with a paperclip. That should make both fans run.

no if, and ,or buts,, if a fan does not work,, you hit it on the back side and it comes on,, you got a bad fan motor .........it might run for a few minutes, few hrs, even frew days but it needs to be replaced .
on a 2000 acc 4cyl engine
main cooling fan is the 1 on the pass side

a/c fan is the 1 on the driver side
like JIM siad BOTH fans should come on when you turn the a/c on, if 1 was not on and came on after you tapped it,, it needs that fan motor

Thanks, this makes sense. The housing and blades are working fine. Should I just replace the motor or the entire assembly? My only concern is the blade attachment to the motor pinion. Shouldn't be a problem, should it?

The motor is waiting for me at NAPA. Funny but so many get the 2000 Acc Radiator and AC fan backwards. I'm glad you mentioned it is on the passenger side.

Thanks,
Flydoe

It's funny that the fans are 'radiator' &'AC' in name only. BOTH fans pull air thru BOTH the condensor & the radiator.
