2001 Honda Accord EX

2001 Honda Accord EX
It finally happened. 344,xxx miles.
Cruising on the highway...... I start to hear a "clank, clank, clank" sound. Put the windows up and the "clank, clank, clank" gets faster and faster. There is no sound more disconcerting than the sound of metal striking metal.
2 seconds later, "clank, clank, clank, POP, jingle, jingle" A plumb of smoke visible in my rear review mirror. I immediately pull over, shut off and open the hood. Oil is visibly gushing out of my engine. Further inspection shows a 2 inch by 2 inch hole in the engine, to the right of the manifold O2 senor.
Car wont start. Doesn't even click.
So my questions:
1. The transmission was about to go and now the engine has. Is it worth fixing? What does a engine and transmission usually cost?
2. Is there a demand for 2001 Honda Accord EX parts such that I keep the car in my yard for a few months and part it out?

You're better off selling to a salvage yard and look for another ride, IMO.
You could probably find a used motor and trans for < $1000, plus another $600-$1000 to install, and have a new lease.
If you go this way, take your time searching for a good engine and trans. There seem to be more problems w/ 98-02 accord AT's, but clearly some do last well. Good maintenance is probably the key.
Check car-part.com to find sources near your zip code, go by to inspect how they store the engines (sitting on a crate inside or under a damaged hood outside). I purchased a used Dodge Ram V8 and looked at perhaps half a dozen, before deciding. You can also ask for VIN number of donor (if they know) and use CarFax or other service to see how many miles, owners the engine has had. This was one of critieria I used to screen engines, availability of VIN history through Carfax.
good luck

Unless you have a place to store the car it will be difficult. You will not sell these parts quickly. It could take months to find sellers for major parts. If that works for you suggest posting on craigslist for buyers to come and pull their own part. Put prices for parts in the ad.
good luck
