Default 2003 Accord, OBD not ready?

Hello all,

I've got a 2003 Accord LX 4 cyl. A couple of weeks back, the check
engine light came on. I took it to a Honda dealer, they replaced the
secondary O2 sensor. I took it back to inspection the next day and
was told the computer was not ready. So, after reading posts here
and another honda site, I got some info. I did the "drive cycle" thing,
to get it ready(a few times), NG. I checked a few fuses, all tested good.
I replaced both backup fuses(even tho they tested good). The other day,
I did the drive cycle thing, then hooked up an OBD scanner Before turning
the car off. I got an 8 Monitors ready message, BUT when I turn off the
car and restart, I get only 4 Ready. My time is running out on my NJ
"rejected" inspection sticker, I can't afford another ticket or registraion
revoke. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
George

Welcome.
There's a whole list of things that has to happen for ALL the readyness codes to be set. It's not as simple as driving 5 times. Some of them require a certain speed to be maintained for a certain period of time.

Thanks Jim,

Guess I'll give it some more time before it's back to the dealer
(hopefuly back to inspection without dealer). For what it's worth,
I drive 50 miles each way to work, combo of local roads and highways.
I hope it retains the codes soon.

Thanks again,
George

I've got a 2003 shop manual, I'll try to remember to look up that "readyness" stuff.

Thanks again Jim,

I was wondering since the obd scanner lists 8 monitors ready,
before shutting off the car,why it would go back to 4 incomplete
after turning off. I just hope it's not enough drive cycles and I hit
the magic number soon.

Thanks,
George

(Sorry I took so long before I remembered to look it up)

There's 8 readyness codes, but I have a suspicion that 4 of them reset whenever you turn off the car. Easy to set, always monitoring, these look like the ones that don't need any specific driving conditions to be met.
- A/F sensor Heater
- Misfire detection
- Fuel system monitor
- Comprehensive

Thanks for the advice Jim, i appreciate your time.
Fyi, I've since had the car back to the dealer, they reflashed the
computer. It still won't retain the "readiness". I've checked all the
fuses, changed the negative battery cable and driven 2K plus miles.
I did manage to get the car inspected at a private garage that tested
it without turning the engine off. So, now it's not as urgent, and I'm pondering my next move. Not sure if I should go back to the dealer,
I don't know if I want to pay for a new computer right now.

Thanks again,
George
