Default '85 (w/ carburator) dies once on startup every time

Hi All:

I inherited the car a few years ago and fixed it up some w/ a rebuilt head & new fuel pump & relay because it seemed too good to just toss out. It runs fine but the weird starting still eludes me. it used to die at stop signs too but I jerry-rigged a bypass on a vacuum solenoid that's supposed to boost the engine to overcome power drain by the AC, so that it's always on. Now once it warms up for a minute it usually runs ok, but it's a workaround and not a solution. gets about 23 mpg on back roads (the only kind we got here), & up to 31 on the freeway.

I kind of suspect that the problem is a vacuum pot attached to the choke, ok let me qualify that: That vacuum pot seems ok but somewhere there are valves that turn it on, such as the AC boost, & I suspect there are other conditions where it should engage too, like startup. Does anyone know where that valve is? other suggestions?

thanks

Default thanks

You've done me a great service. I shall remember this after the revolution.
even though you're smarmy, and territorial.
