Default 87-89 Lxi Transmission swap

Hi there,
I'm new to the forum and want to now how hard it is to swap a manual for an automatc transmission in a 87-89 Hatchback with 2.0Lxi? I use a wheelchair and can't drive a stick. I haven't been able to find a clean auto either w/ low miles. The 87-89 Accord is perfect for me to haul my racing wheelchair or handcycle w/o having to take it apart. It's also fun to drive and fuel efficient. My 91 Prelude is too short and my 71 International Travelall only gets 12 MPG. Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure how the PCM or ECU is on those models but you should essentially be able to just find a wrecked auto and swap the parts out fairly easily. No clue if those have a seperate computer for the tranny or not. I highly doubt it though.

I have a similar model. Of course in those years they changed a few of the previously vacuum operated systems to electronic. You will need a different shifter and few more idle controllers. Mechanically it should be pretty easy. I don't know if the cv axles are any different. You might be able to do without a few of those controllers but no guarantees. I'd say it is a lot easier to go from auto to manual.

Default 88 to 89 tranny swap

hey tokengimp, hows it goin? i see your thred is quite old(like 4 years!) but i was wonderin if you ever did the swap, and how it turned out. I have an 89 auto, and an 88 manual,i want to swap the manual into my 89 auto, was wonderin about the ecu,did you swap them? It seems that the mechanical part is pretty straight forward, but im wonderin about the electrical part of the swap, like sensors and the ecu,if anyone on here has done this swap before,it would be great to hear from u or them, thanks in advance for your imput....jack of none

I see that you added "89 LXi" to your last post.

Pretty easy on this gen.

DX- manual windows and carb'd
LX- power windows and carb'd
LXi- power windows and FI.

There are some others where I can split the 86-87 from the 88-89's but who cares about that.
