87, rough idle/ stalls when deaccelerating
Here is the background info. 1987 carburated accord 5 speed with 230k. I bought it about a week ago for $550 because it was running so crappy and the previous owners had let it sit for 4 months I believe. I did a compression test and the engine is fine.
So far I've replaced the spark plugs, distributor and rotor, spark plug wires, both fuel filters, pcv valve. I found a vacuum leak and replaced some of the hoses. (There might still be a leak, I think I'm hearing a slight hissing from behind the manifold). I've sprayed the carb with some cleaner and ran a cleaner thru my brake booster line to clean out the manifold. I put a cleaner in the gas tank that is supposed to help get rid of water and clean out the fuel system. Replaced thermostat too cuz it was stuck.
Also I've messed with the timing, I'm not sure how to adjust it correctly, it should be alright though. The Haynes manual doesn't help much with that... I've also adjusted the idle because it was idling high, it's now at about 800-1000.
-So the main problem right now is that it stalls when I'm coming to a stop. As soon as I shift out of gear and hit the brake the rpm's drop then it stalls. - The idle is rough and jumps around. It's misfiring. Also it doesn't do the fast idle when it's cold...It has a few times... I messed with some dashpots that do something with the throttle, that could have messed that up.
So my guesses right now are either the carb is still dirty or the gas is bad, in which case the cleaner I added should eventually fix it... I wish I dropped the gas tank and cleaned it before filling it up. Might need to take apart and clean the carb. Maybe the EGR system has something wrong with it, though I know the EGR valve is working.
I'm wondering about the dashpot system though. There are 2 on either side of the throttle body that have adjusting screws on the arms. Are they part of the emissions system? I believe they are supposed to work with the fast idle. Do they also keep the throttle open when deaccelerating or shifting? If so, I think that could be a reason why it's stalling.
Oh and maybe the timing belt could be attributed to the misfiring.. I think it hasn't been replaced since 120k. But I really doubt it's effecting anything.
Any idea's or input? I probably just need to get thru a tank of gas then see If I'm still having problems.
