8th Gen Accord V6 EX-L Auto Tranny
Yesterday as I got onto the 101 freeway, my accord began acting very weird suddenly. The speedometer and RPMs went out of whack and I had to stop on the on-ramp on the right shoulder as the car began to slow down. As soon as I put the car in park, it made a weird grinding noise. At that point, I determined that the transmission had gone very bad and it was immediately towed to the mechanic after AAA came to the rescue. I was doing some research to see whether or not the 5 speed automatic transmission was faulty. And I got very mixed results. Which brings me to ask this question. Is it true that Honda automatic transmissions (particularly 8th gen) are faulty and have a tendency to fail when the odometer is over 100k miles? My 2012 Honda Accord is nearly 230k miles and ran well with little issues and tune ups. Edit: the car had its axle seal and brakes replaced a couple days prior to the tranny failure. Did the axle seal leak have anything to do with the transmission failure?

I would say it is a good possibility. Who did the seal change? Was the fluid checked after the seal replacement to see if any needed to be added? If fluid was added which kind? Could the seal been installed incorrectly and it was still leaking?
I know a few people with over 100k in the 8th gen and never had a problem. They also swap the fluid per the manual.

So it's an automatic and previous question still remain. What type of fluid was put in? Did they flush it or do a drain and refill? How many miles are on the car? They way you are describing your issue something wasn't done right especially if you had not issues prior to.

unfortunately, yes... my father originally bought this car new, and daily driven it from work to home. He does a 2 hour drive every day to work and to home. The car has seen a lot and the paint is scratched chipped. The had some work done (timing belt, catalytic converter, air filter was changed). I can't really afford to maintain it myself because I need to save the money for college supplies. Although I mainly drive the car now, my father makes all the payments for the maintenance on the car.
Axle seal was replaced? One possibility is the axle wasn't snapped in completely into the transmission, and eventually worked it's way out & disengaged from the differential.
What happened to the speedometer & tachometer? Did they both spin up to high speed / high rpm as the car slowed down? That would fit with an axle popping out from the transmission.
