Default 91 Honda Accord Blower Motor and Resistor replaced- still not blowing

Hello

Due to some health experiences had to pay labor to mechanic to install new blower motor and blower motor control module/resistor.

I purchased new motor and resistor from RockAuto.

After install, still have almost no airflow. The AC comes on, can hear the compressor kick in and very cold air at vents.
The airflow is just very low. I can hear the motor shift very clearly when I change through the levels from the lowest to high,
but there is only a very slight change at the vents. Even at high, it is very low airflow.

Because labor is expensive, I wanted to do some research here before I go back to mechanic. He said the motor must be defective.
But researching here I saw for a newer Honda a list of tests to do for V. I could not find one for a 91, so posting here in case anyone
may have next troubleshoot steps. (Before just getting a new motor and trying again, I guess)

Thanks!

Pulling the blower motor is very easy. It is held in by 3 bolts. You can look at the squirrel cage to see if it is spinning with the fan motor as you change fan speeds.

Look at the wiring to the new motor. It should be 2 wires. Are the wires spliced into the new motor? Or is there an electrical connector at the motor?

Thank you for your reply!

When I researched it, this video showed many steps/not easy-
.

It is a 93 accord. Are you saying getting to it is easier to get to than the video shows if you say only 3 bolts?

Ignore my post about 3 bolts, The easy blower motor removal started with the 94 accords.

Drove again to test this morning and no changes. IAs said, the motor itself and resistor SOUNDS to be working very properly. Clear difference when shifting from low to high.
Can hear the motor change from low to high and sounds very good.

BUT the actual air output from vents is still next to none. There is a very slight amount of air blowing. SO I am thinking it must be the squirrel cage/s?

Maybe when it was R/R there was some kind of damage to one or both? I only had the motor itself, so mechanic took squirrel cages off of old motor (and wires) and put them onto new. There is a kind of whistle sound when first turned on then smooths out expecially on the higher levels. Can still hear it when it is on the lowest two. To me, it sounds like maybe something rubbing.

There is a motor and cages/full assembly at the wrecking yard here for $25 if I pull the part or $45 if they pull. Because this is a 91 thought, not sure how good it would be. The car it is coming off of looks in good condition in the photos.

Question is- once mechanic opens the dash again and gets out current set up- I can have the new motor bench tested. But if it is about where the squirrel cages are connected, would getting the assembly from wrecking yard be necessary. Or is getting a whole nes motor with the squirrel cages the call.

Tossing thoughts and welcome any input from anyone with experience with this. Because he removed the old one, I did not get to see the squirrel cages directly to see if I am on track here with why it seems a good working motor, properly shiftin levels, powering up fine= still no air flow.I saw in the video and in other posts that it is a tight space, so I don't know if the thought that some kind of damage to the squirrel cages when pulling could make sense. Or if there is a way they attach to new motor that maybe just needs to be aligned better.

Thank you alll for being here.

Ask the shop if they had to splice in the wires to the aftermarket fan. They could have reversed the wires and the squirrel cage is now spinning in the opposite direction.

Thank you for this! Checking these wires will be next step.

Also, I did not purchase aftermarket fan, so he was splicing wires from the new blower motor to the original squirrel cages/fan. (You are referring to the squirrel cages as fan, correct?)

When I got the blower motor, it was motor only. When I looked for parts then, I did not see whole assembly vs just the motor. And got only the motor.

Is it generally not a problem to put in just a new motor? If anyone has done this repair- should just the motor replacement work fine or is it better to get the whole assembly?
I just saw this https://www.rockauto.com/genImages/5...0W%20Wheel.pdf and it says there can be problems with proper fit and balance.
My thought was it would be a fairly simple switch of just the motor (aside from having to take all the stuff out to get to it....)
But maybe if anyone has done this repair- is it usually fine to use the existing squirrel cages and just swap the motor?

Thanks again

Think of the setup like your typical box fan. You got a new electric motor. The squirrel cages are like the blades attached to the fan motor. Your motor has squirrel cages on both sides.

The important item for attaching the squirrel cages is they spin with the fan motor. They look to be splined and held in by a clip. Each squirrel cage has a different part number, so there is some kind of difference. I'm not sure if it is possible to install them on the wrong sides. I'm not familiar with the 90-93 setup.

You'll need to ask the shop if they wired it backwards, so the squirrel cages are not pushing air through the vents, or if it was possible to install them on the wrong side. They should not charge you to redo the repair, as they should have checked their work before giving the car back to you.

Thank you again so much . This is just right information for me to take back to mechanic monday to help him see what we can check.

Will post what is discovered.

Still curious if anyone has an opinion on getting a blower motor assembly from the wrecking yard. Is it a part that can be in good enough condition or likely worn out like the current one due to this being a 91.

So the ending to this was- took back to mechanic and showed him the post saying to check the two wires/see if they are reversed and look at squirrel cages to see if it may have been possible to put them on opposite sides.

He said No. There were only two wires and they were different colors, so he is sure those were not reversed. He also said it was not possible that he put the squirrel cages on wrong sides as he laid it out in front of him and followed the parts as they were. He said he would remove the glove box and get motor out for me to take it and have it bench tested.I said you could clearly hear the motor working great though, just not pushing air through. He said there must be another problem then like the blend doors may be stuck closed.

After an hour plus, he called me to show me the box. He had it out, but connected and showed that, at this point, the air was blowing out in the right direction. We also tested air recirculation doors and they were opening and closing fine.He said there were other blender doors on the driver side and that would be a separate job to take apart and check if that was it. So what did I want to do- should he just put it back in and see if it worked now? (And if it didn't work, I would have to plan$ for second job of opening the drivers side.)

He put it back in and.....it worked like a charm. So unknown if he discovered something from first attempt and adjusted that (wire change? squirrel cage? better alignment putting it back in?) or what magic landed and made it suddenly work perfectly. He did not say he found anything in his previous work that he changed, but indicated he was showing me the motor just as it had been so that I could see the air was blowing in right direction so it wasn't crossed wire or squirrel cage backwards (if that is even possible.) However it happened, after this visit- Strong, excellent air flow. Proper changes in air flow at each speed. And no more whistling sound at all. A perfectly working new blower motor.
