I just replaced the A/C condensor fan today and noticed that when I turn on the A/C both the radiator and the condensor fan turns on. I know that this is normal for both fans to turn on with the A/C but after a short 2 mile trip I came home and with the engine idling and A/C on, both fans were cycling on and off. Is this normal? I thought that both fans should always remain on with the A/C on? Also the fans never turn on when the engine is shut off. Is this normal?

 

Sounds normal. The fans will cycle with the AC compressor clutch, they don't run constantly.

It's also pretty normal for the fans to NOT run after shutoff. Only when it's really hot. They may start running more as your radiator gets old & loses effectiveness.

 

NOT only does it sound normal but it is normal.. both fansare supposed to cycle on and off continousely .with the a/c on,, they are affected by the thermostatic switch located in the evap case,,,,,,,,,with the a/c off anf engine running by the cool temp switch located at distr housing ..
after engine is shut off, if coolant is above 224 ..ONLY the main fan ( pass side ) will come on and only for about 10-15 minutes ..

 

Thanks guys! I am a new Accord owner and I am relieved to know that this condition is normal. My wife's Acura Legend will allow both fans to run continuously with the ac on. The rest of the cooling system is very similar fan timer, 220deg. oil temp sensor etc.
What about the coolant itself. Should I use only Honda coolant? My Acura is very sensitive to silicate based coolants and it is strongly recomended to use only Honda coolant. What is the general consensus on using only Honda fluids coolant, atf, power steering fluid etc?

 

I'm a firm believer in the new Honda coolant, it states it has 20% greater heat disapation; I flushed out my old toyota and put in the new Honda coolant and had a noticeable drop on the temp gauge. Besides the new coolant smells good to.
