I just purchased a '92 LX that has a bad vibration at idle when the A/C is turned on; the vibration is still there with the A/C off, just not as bad.
I've installed new plugs (needed those anyway), and checked for leaking hoses or anything out of the ordinary.
Someone at the Honda dealership said I needed new motor mounts, but I'm not really sure about that, and if that will cure the problem, because the problem seems to be the engine just not idling smoothly for one reason or another.
Any comments or advice appreciated.

did you check your exhaust for a miss . usually the dealerships see these types of problems and can diagnose them pretty good . but not all dealerships are created equal.

 

Yes, 'checked that, but it doesn't seem to be an actual miss. 'Sounds like a problems with correct fuel/air mixture to one of the cylinders, but I could be completely off on that. I need to adjust the valve gap too, and that could be contributing. Either the mixture to one of the cylinders is off, or it's possibly an ignition problem, but that seems unlikely, as new plugs were just installed; still, that leaves several other possibilities in the ignition system besides plugs.
Actually, what you stated is very true re all dealerships are not created equal, as the service person I talked to made the statement that this idle roughness was a "known" problem with this vehicle....sure....I'll be it vibrated like that when it was new !!

 

Well if the you want try the "Home Made Poly-Urethane Motor mount" that worked like a charm all u need is:

• A tube of 3M's window weld ($10.99 at Advanced Auto)
• Caulk gun ($1.99 at Wal-Mart)
• Brake cleaner or some sort of cleaning solvent
• Something flat and about an inch wide (see pics)
• Proper tools to remove the desired motor mount

And 24 hrs to cure and your set will be stiff.

 

no codes ? did you examine the distributor cap and rotor ? do the basic test for motor mounts. is your rear or tranny mount vacuum controlled

 

as the service person I talked to made the statement that this idle roughness was a "known" problem with this vehicle....sure....I'll bet it vibrated like that when it was new.

the 2.2 with its balance belt is the smoothest 4 cyl. I have. at about 400k it is still smother than my 3 civics

 

Check the mounts.....also clean the IAC.

Did you look at the cap and rotor?

I'll check out the replies, plus get as much info as possible off the net from any service manuals I can find; I think I saw a link in one of the stickies earlier.

If it's worse with the AC on, have you watched the AC belt while it's running? Look for silly stuff like wobbly pulleys just to rule it out.
