Has anyone removed the hood release cable?

The latch end of the cable has a metal ball fastened to it and - the inside end has a small piece of metal attached.

Neither piece seems to come off. They both look like they are permanently attached?

Do you have to cut the cable to get the ball off?
Not sure how to attack this.
