92 Power Steering Whine that isn't the pump
Hi all,
I've rummaged through the forum but no answer avail.
I'm in a 92, I-4, Manual Transmission, 154k miles.
I recently had what I thought was the power steering pump replaced, but after taking it back to the shop due to the LOUD steering whine, was told that they actually only replaced the leaking reservoir.
They then attempted to replace the fluid (still loud), a junk yard pump (still loud) and a rebuilt pump (sooo loud) and finally admitted that they couldn't fix the issue.
The car looks rough but was mechanically sound up until now, but now it is embarrassing loud at this point.
Anyone had this issue and how did you resolve it?
Thanks

My '92 daily driver with 230,000 on it, developed a mild whine 15,000 ago, audible for 2 seconds
when I first turn the wheel sharply to leave the driveway.
It is never to be heard again until the next morning; so diagnosis/repair is not on my radar at this point.

Yeah, mine is very loud (as in, people turning heads to find our WTH is going on), unless I'm straight-line driving on the highway... and I think I just can't hear it due to wind noise at that point.
I'm uncertain if the fluid ever bubbled or foamed, but will be my next inspection.
The noise seems to fluctuate when I depress the clutch!?

Seems like the clutch should have nothing to do with it. But have someone work the clutch while you listen under the hood. It might be unrelated to the power steering??
Try a poor-man's stethoscope... scrap piece of garden hose to your ear. Just don't get caught up in the spinning belts.
With the PS pump replacement, presumably they put new O-rings on the flange where the hose bolts onto the pump?
