Do you really think it would be worth it to get a second opinion from another mechanic? The guy at the shop seemed to be honest with me because he told me it would be a better idea to get another good used car instead of spending the money to fix this one.

Yes I think it would be a very good idea to get a second opinion.

It's a good sign (for his honesty) that he give you advice that results in NOT spending money at his shop. Still, a second opinion is always nice.

If you're stretched for money I'd replace the front hub bearings - very likely the source of grinding sound - and drive it.

on buying different car - where are you located?
but yes I'd buy different rather than do CV, bearings, steering.
where I am $2500 and some waiting will get an exceptional 20 yr old car;
$1500 gets a OK one needing tires or brakes .
