I had this happen on a 1997 Acura 2.5TL and had to remove the intermediate shaft to get them out and use BFH to eventually separate the two shafts. Problem was a jammed snap ring.

I think this may happen when some aftermarket axles put in replacement snap rings that are slighlty larger. In one case I tried to install an axle and it would just not engage. I finally pulled the snap ring and replaced w/ one from old axle and axle shaft popped right in.

good luck

UPDATE....Junk yard saved me. I got a intermediate shaft for 40 bucks...... I went ahead and had the old cv spline pressed out. The snap ring was rolled onto the spline. This was a factory mistake as this had never been out of the car...
