Default 94 Accord Speedometer/Odometer problem

Hey everyone! I've seen hundreds of posts from other owners of this generation car, but I'm getting confused.

I just bought a 94 Accord yesterday, and while driving it home, I noticed that the speedometer and the odometer didn't work. The speedo just hovered around 20 mph, and the odometer wasn't moving at all. About five minutes later, they magically started to work for about five minutes. I've had to punch the dashboard to get it working!

Cruise Control works, and the CEL isn't on. Some responses on other posts include a bad VSS, others say to replace the entire cluster, and some say it's just a bad solder/needs cleaning. The one thing that is constant though is the trouble code.

I'm a mechanical noob, and it's all Greek to me at the moment.

Any input?

Since cruise is working, VSS is working as cruise depends on VSS input.

You have a gauge panel problem. There have been several recent cases of fixes by resoldering the circuit board of the panel. Search for those posts. Check youtube for videos. The "thump" fix of the gauge panel reinforces liklihood of faulty solder jts.

good luck

After taking it to the garage, that confirmed the answer... Odd thing though. Not sure if this has anything to do with it or not, but I did the "flick trick" with the odometer reset, and it magically started to work yesterday. It failed yet again today, but this time, the odometer wasn't working at all, and the speedo needle was jumping between 15 and 25 mph.

Is that even more proof that it is in fact, a bad solder?

Probably, did you find/read the posts on gauge panel soldering?

good luck

The odometer is mechanical, insert your key into the maintenance reset slot several times and see if that fixes it. The speedometer problem is due to the printed circuit board or the solder.

Redbull - I haven't tried the maintenance reset slot yet.

Texas - I really haven't had too much time to look over the forums as of yet. Will do that tomorrow!

Thank you all for your help. It is greatly appreciated!!!!

I tried the maintenance reset a few times yesterday, and unfortunately it didn't work. I'll probably work on the soldering next weekend and keep you all posted!

Just wanted to give you guys an update on everything.... I downloaded a speedometer app yesterday since the cops here are jerks with speed limits. There is one stretch of road that I use for work where the speed is 55, so out of curiosity, I turned the CC on. Lo and behold, it doesn't work.

I found a new replacement VSS on Amazon for $18, so I'm going to be installing that next week. I'll also be checking the solder, and probably going to clean everything up as well.
