My husband was driving home from work and went to switch from 4th gear to 1st but never released the clutch. He heard a popping sound then put it back down to 3rd gear but now the car won't move. Everything feels the same when you try to shift it just won't move. There is no grinding or any kind of sound. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

 

With the engine running, and NOT pressing the clutch pedal; can it shift into any gear? Do you still feel the "H" pattern? Or is the shift lever able to move all around any direction? (trying to rule out broken shift cables)
