Which door and how are you trying to lock it?

Driver's door will not lock unless the door is closed. Say you are sitting inside, close the door, then lock it manually.

If you are trying to lock it with the door open, I think it'll work if you pull the door-latch lever while locking it.

Probably designed that way to prevent locking the keys inside??

Yup. On my 97, if you hit the power lock button, it'll lock the doors, then unlock the drivers door. Once you're outside the car (door open) if you lift the outside door handle and manually push the door lock button, it'll go into the lock position. Close the door and it's locked. Like Jim said, I believe it's so you don't lock your keys in the car. On my 99, or my wife's 00, the door will lock, and you can lock your keys in it.
