96 Accord Turns on then off

96 Accord Turns on then off
96 accord ex 5dpeed vtec single cam ....
I was driving to work today. As I was driving my car the red battery light went on in my dash. I pulled over popped my hood open it slightly smelled like some type of smoke. I closed the hood try starting the engine again. Engine turns on but turns right back off. Tom's go up then go right back down. The engine stay on if I give it gas. If I stop giving it gas the rpms drop and the enigine shuts off. I tried turning the car one last time, it did the same thing. After I noticed smoke coming out of the car. I hope I dint do anything to my engine. Please helppp
