96 honda accord EX - V6 auto transmission
Ok here is a new one to us.
Wife just called.
hey honey I cant get the car out of park with the engine on. It is stuck in park. I tell her turn engine off, turn key to pre-start mode and pull shifter down with foot on brake pedal. Sorry dont work. So then I say ok do this. Put key in shift lock on side of shifter pull down into neutral, then start then shift to gear.
Ok it works.
What the hell have i got going on. All my cars are sticks except this one. I'm not really proficient on automatic transmissions.
I've read brake switch, solenoid or computer on passenger floor board.
So have anybody seen this one.
Thanks

This problem is caused by the interlock solenoid in the console has either failed or is mis-adjusted. Solenoid moves a gate which enables the shifter to be moved.
It is also possible that brake light switch is stuck in OFF position. This will disable the interlock solenoid and prevent shifter being moved. Check brake lights. If no brake lights, then switch is either stuck or faulty. I've repaired this problem once on my 97 Acura TL by spraying w/ WD40, and it's never happened again. Good thing, cause looks like the dashboard might have to be removed to access the switch. I think access is better in Accords.
good luck

Try bypassing the brake switch w/ a jumper wire to see if fuse still blows. If not, you know the brake switch has an internal short. If yes, there is a short in wiring, or connectors somewhere.

yeah it is not the brake switch I over rode that one. took the console apart and starting looking at connectors etc. they are really sticky and dirty started cleaning and checking last night.

Soft drinks can cause shorts. Look for pinched wires in the trunk. Sometimes removing one bulb at a time is necessary. Also check the rear window brake light for problems.
good luck
