Default 96 VTEC high level brake light

The high level brake light on my 96 2.2 VTEC auto does not work for most of the time. Occasionally it will work but this never lasts long. When I tried to remove the cover to look at the connections I could not see how to release it (excuse me ifI'm missing something obvious). Can anyone advise me on the problem and /or how to remove the cover?

Going on memory here, but I think access is through the trunk backside of the assy.

PS, put your year, model in your signature line.

good luck

most likely it's the original bulb and needs replacement. the fun part is that being original the socket tends to like it's home. so now it takes a lot of force to twist the socket out of the housing. it may even break. had that happen too... if it comes out lube up the contact points on the plastic with a small amount of grease or pb blaster or something.
