Default 97 accord 5 speed manual transmission noise

I recently bought my first honda car. Only problem I noticed is that sometimes the transmission will make what seems to me a "dry grinding or growling sound". Seems when I'm in 5th gear it never makes the noise. It doesn't make the noise at any particular rpm. It does make the noise in all first 4 gears, but not all the time. Please don't tell me my transmission is going! I changed out the transmission fluid last weekend, but it still makes the sound. I was concerned about the half shaft bearing on the drivers side, and was wondering if that might be the culprit? Doesn't seem to be bad by shaking it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

i have the same exact problem and working on getting a new transmission. i replaced my half shaft and wasn't it. Half shafts are hard to find. i have the one i bought off eBay and took it back off cause it didn't fix the problem.if you would like to go that route first let me know and ill put it up on eBay just so u know its legit. but i wouldn't waste your money. i go to school a the University of Northwestern Ohio for automotive and alternate fuels.i asked a transmission teacher what he thought about my problem and he said the input shaft bearings are bad. he dont know if its the front, back or both bearings for the input shaft. it seemed to be cheaper to replace tranny than replace bearings and have the tools to do it. but i know exactly what your going through i also bought my car like this. sorry and good luck

ok...so looks like a new tranny is in order. Do you know what years and/or model of tranny's will fit my 97 accord DX?

any h series or f series trans will fit. Any accord from 90-97 and any prelude from 90-2000 (I think). But I do know if it is a h22 or h23 engine in the prelude you can use that trans as long as it isn’t the prelude SH

I found this on a local website:

"Hi, I have a 1992 Honda Civic Ex-v for sale for Parts
It's got a D16 Vtec Engine, 5 Speed with a short throw shifter
Kenwood Stereo"

Will this fit my car?

D-series is a smaller-displacement lower-power engine. Even if it bolts up (which I doubt) I'd guess it's a lot weaker than a F-series trans.

I understand. I might have something lining up this weekend to get a whole car with a good tranny. Who knows, maybe if it's in good as shape as the car i'm running or better, I'll just put it on the road. Thanks for your help guys!

funny...it's raining today, and all the sounds are gone from the transmission...
