Default 97 Accord Auto trans problems

My 97 wagon suddenly stopped shifting last nigth. It will start out but about the time it shoud go into second, it starts slipping badly. The rpms will go to the max and the car will stop. Never had an issue with this transmission until last night,. Fluid always serviced with Honda fluid. It looks pink and clear, No burnt smell. Any idea? Oh, the D4 indicator lamp bulb has been burned out for a year.

The D4 light burnout won't prevent extracting codes w/ OBD2 scanner. Get the codes (AZ, ORiellys) for best chance of determining problem.

good luck

P0715... speed sensor, but the speedometer and cruise is working okay. The problem seems to be intermittent. Occassionally it shifts fine, most of the time it is slow and late to shift from 1st to 2nd, then maybe it will to to third maybe not with rpms just going higher. There was a noticeble whine when I started it this morning. Reverse is okay.,

P0715 is not the Vehicle Speed Sensor, but the Mainshaft Speed Sensor (MSS). Code indicates a fault in the MSS, wiring, connector, or PCM. Disconnect MSS and check resistance w/ VOM. It should be w/i 400-600 ohm range. If not in spec, the MSS is faulty, wiring, or connector.

If in spec, check resistance again at the PCM connector for same wires. If ohms again check OK, the PCM is the problem.

good luck

Also, check out TechAuto's AwardSpace transmission troubleshooting/repair website. This caught my eye:

Author's tip on the NM/NC sensors: Usually, these sensors can pick up a lot of metal particles or metal dusts which can magnetically pile on top of the sensor surroundings. On some vehicle, the control unit simply won't function properly and the car can jerk harshly. On these cases, I simply remove the sensor then wipe and wash out the metal debris and reinstall. I then reset the computer. Everything would work as it should. The buildup of materials simply won't let the sensor read.

Where is this sensor locate? Do you have a part number? Edit: never mind, I found it in the manual.
