Ive been having transmission problems on my 99 accord 160,000 miles, when its really acting up it doesnt want to shift gears when i stomp on the gas just to get around someone on the interstate. it acts like it hitting rev limiter(hard-shifting?) A mechanic told me my fluid was bad but didnt reccommend a fluid change. He said i may not make home that all the gunk could be holding it all together. Does that make any since to anybody? so ive been afraid to drain and add new fluid. I have been putting lucas transmission treatment in and it seems to fix the problem for a while then it will act up again so i add more lucas. So i guess my question is, is it ok to go head and drain not flush just drain and add till the fluid is clean. please need help any suggestings
Change the fluid.....the idea that the "junk" is holding parts together is an old wives tale.
FWIW The 98-02 trans was problematic; several warranty extensions and internal upgrades.
If you got 160k miles out of one, I'm surprised

Wow, glad I looked at this thread 'cause this is exactly whats happening to mine. Though I took mine to the dealer and they said they would need to replace the trans. What would yall recommend? Change the fluids and see if it clears up or bite the bullet and replace it?
If they hooked up their scanner to the tranny computer, they might know more than we do about YOUR particular problem.
I'd try the fluid change, but get prepared for the tranny replacement just in case it doesn't work.

Drain & fill, then drive around for a while. Repeat until the fluid drains out relatively clean. You can only drain about 1/3 of the total fluid, so its a game of diluting what's left inside. Should take about 3 quarts (or a little less) each time.
To my mind, the cost of the fluid is a good investment towards MAYBE making the tranny last longer. They have been problematic, maybe it'll break down anyway, but dirty oil can't actually be GOOD for the tranny...
