We've had a 99 Accord EX- 4dr, 2.3L(4cyl) in the family since it was new. The car has 156,000 miles on it....and the timing belt has never been replaced. It isn't making noise, but I'm thinking that I better change it before it breaks. What parts do I need to do this job, and does anyone have step by step instructions? Is this a relatively easy job, or should I take it to a shop? Thanks

 

How much DIY experience do you have? Replacing the timing belt is tedious, but not really difficult (except for the crank pulley bolt). IMO, the components that you access when you do this job should be changed, so you don't have to repeat the work. That would be the timing and balance shaft belt. Any seals that may be leaking oil. Water pump, tensioner pulleys.

 

Thanks. I've been working on cars for 20 years. Just wondering if anyone has step by step instructions...or know where I can find them? I have a Haynes manual, but a honda manual would probably be better. Should I go with all Honda dealer parts, or would aftermarket be ok. I'm only looking at keeping this car fo maybe another 50,000 miles.

 

At 156K and it have never been done, please don't wait too long. You are on borrowed time already. If it goes....it can/will be more expensive (bent valves, ect)

OE vs aftermarket, this will start a debate.....well I haven't started one today so what the heck. I personally trust Gates products and if it was me I would get their kit (both belts, idler/tensioner pulley, water pump). As for the seals, again I would go with a quality aftermarket brand (Victor or National)....again, this is just my opinion.

EDIT: while doing this it is easier to set the motor at TDC while the plugs are out. I would get a new set of NGK plugs to put back in. Then since you are there, when was the last time the cap and rotor were replace---olive branch--get those from the dealer.
