Default 99 accord neutral safety switch

I have a 99 accord 6cly auto trans. The other day the car would not start all lights came on and hear a click but no turn over. Held the key on and wiggled the shifter fome park to neutral then it started. Some times it starts fine other times have to hold key on and move shifter back and forth to start. I think it is the neutral safty switch. Any thoughts on this much appr. and any link to a thread to change it

Hey man,

On vehicles with automatic transaxles, the back-up light switch is located on the right side of the transaxle, under a protective cover. The switch is actually a combination switch for the neutral safety circuit, gear shift indicator and back-up lights.

Here is the procedure for replacing the switch:

1) Set the parking brake and place the transaxle in Neutral.

2) Remove the protective cover for the switch.

3) Detach the electrical connector from the switch.

4) Loosen the switch mounting bolts, and remove the switch by lifting it away from the transaxle.

To install:

1) Make sure the transmission is in Neutral.

2) Set the switch such that it is in the neutral position. The switch will click when it is in the neutral position.

3) The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal, making sure of the following:
  • Turn the ignition switch ON and move the gear selector from position to position making sure all the gear indicator lights work properly.
  • Then place the gear selector in the Reverse position and verify that the reverse lights are functioning.
  • Next test to make sure the engine will start in the Neutral and Park positions, but will NOT start in any other position. If, necessary, adjust the switch as needed.

It may be a problem with the ignition switch. See Honda TSB regarding changing ignition switch:

Also, does brake lights work?
