99 Coup Transmission Question
so i just inherited my gf's 99 AT coupe with 168k. she didnt take care of the car at all... omfg... new engine mounts, distributor, timing belt, etc.
question to any and all with experience...? should i leave the tranny fluid in its merky near black stage or should i flush and replenish? i know i maybe running the risk of blowing the transmission but wanted to know if anyone has any input? thanks-

If you are a do-it-yourself kind of person, my recommendation would be to start cycling in new trans fluid. On my 1998 Honda Accord, I got it in the same condition with 148k miles. I drained the transmission fluid, ran it for 500 miles, then drained it again...which allowed me to cycle in around 2.25 quarts of Honda ATF slowly. Then, I just did this proceedure every other oil change, so I'm continuing to cycle in a few quarts of clean Honda ATF every 6-8k miles. Probably overkill, but I keep a case of Honda ATF and do the same thing on my 96 Odyssey. The Accord now has 220k miles and shifts firm. To me it is a cheap/easy way. I don't trust "flush" operations at all, since a mechanic friend warned me away from them about 12 years ago.
