Default ABS light - slightly different than other probs

Hello everyone...long time reader, first time poster.

My ABS light came on last week. My 2004 Accord has 66,800 miles. It has been rainy and snowy over the last week (this is PA after all). The weird thing about the light is that it turns on and off intermittently. It does not turn on as soon as the ignition is fired, it usually waits until I start driving (sometimes within seconds, sometimes minutes). There are times when it does not come on at all (1/3-1/2 of the time).

I read through these forums and I couldn't locate any posts where someone had these exact problems. Before I take my car to a mechanic, I'd like to see if there are other possible solutions to the problem.

I tried disconnecting the batter and reconnecting it (to reset the computer), but it didn't change anything.

The ABS system does not 'arm' itself until you reach a certain speed.
The symptoms you describe could be an intermittant signal from a wheel sensor.
A honda compatible scan tool should be able to retrieve the code.
When the code is known it is much easier to assist you further.

Where/how can I get that test done? Thanks for the help.

Is there any danger to drive the car?

Autozone scans codes for free. I am not sure if their scanner will read ABS codes, but it is worth the trip. Post any codes that they give you on here. They will be P####.

If autozone does not pick up the code, a honda dealership will be able to read the code (and will likely charge you).

There is no danger to drive with the ABS light on. Your ABS system will be disabled, so if you get into a skid on the snow/ice, remember to pump the brake pedal. The regular braking system will work just fine.

I called AutoZone, they cannot test ABS systems with their equipment...any other ideas?

Hey guys, I found a mechanic who can test the code...that should be happening tomorrow.

In addition, the light came on and stayed on right away today (when I started the car)...which was the first time that happened.

Hey guys, my mechanic says that it looks rusted out around the sensor which he thinks is causing it to erratically go on/off. He tried to get it out, but it was too rusted out. He told me he put some lubricant on there and would try to replace it next week.

Does this sound possible/doable?

Thanks.
