Compressor clutch is one possibility, if noise is only present when compressor is turning. Clutch may be loose.

More details. Is it cooling at all? Does compressor engage and release quickly, after 20-30 secs, or other?

Need to figure out the problem before repair procedure.

good luck

Open the hood, look around, pinpoint the location of the sound.

If the smog check failure was for NOX greater than allowable, then cleaning the EGR ports will likely fix the problem. I've done a couple of times on my 94EX.

good luck
