The cable flexes, and binds up, if you turn the **** too fast, but it will loosen if you release the pressure or turn the **** slowly.
I did not notice any crack on the ****, but it just occurred to me that it might be cracked on the back side.

does it just pull straight off? I never trust plastic.

Yes it pulls straight off. There is a metal band around the center part on the backside you might be able to slide off for better inspection of the plastic.

You'll be at the dealer for a new one. In my trips to the bone yard, the first thing gone are the *****.

It's hard to see the crack until you put the **** in a bind, and the crack opens. Pry it with a small screw driver, and you will see the crack. The secret to not breaking the ****, is to stop turning at the first sign of resistance, let it release the slack for a couple seconds, then turn the **** the rest of the way. I did it that way for years, and never broke another ****. I hope this solves your problem, good luck.
