Default Accord 98 Plastic Body Clutch Master and Slave Cylinders

Well I just got done with replacing the timing belt on my 5-speed Accord EX with about 116 K miles on it. Now the clutch master cylinder has gone bad. I have confirmed it is leaking fluid. So I thought I would replace both the master and slave cylinders but here is the catch. These units are both plastic bodied and were later replaced by aluminum bodied units per Service Bulletin 98-084 the lastest version of which (July 14, 2004) lists a total of six (6) parts including the clutch line/Damper Tube Assembly to be replaced. The remaing parts are the master and slave cylinders, connector clips, two O rings, and a connector (Roll) pin. Plastic bodied master and slave cylinders are no longer available and from what I have seen on the web the aluminum units appear to use different fittings for the clutch line hence the need to replace the clutch line which costs a considerable amount.

I was wondering if anyone has run into this situation before; i.e., having to replace plastic body MC/SC with Aluminum body ones. Did the damper tube assemby have to be replaced also? The damper tube assembly fitting on the plastic units is not threaded. The fittings appear to be snap-on and secured with roll pins.

TIA

Alfi

Fellows,

I just got done replacing the MC and SC in my Accord 98. The damper tube indeed has to be replaced also since is preformed differently than the original clutch line which connected the original plastic body MC and SC later upgraded by Honda by aluminum units. If your Accord 98-99 has a plastic body MC and it requires replacement, remember that all parts listed in Service Bulletin 98-084 must be replaced.

Thanks. Do you have a scan of that bulletin? I copied this into the DIY answers forum, and that would be a good addition. If you want to write something like instructions or hints to make the job easier...

I will be glad to do write up on this topic as soon as I get the time within the next few days. I will provide a scanned copy of the Service Bulletin as well.

If it works better to write up a new post in the DIY section, (instead of adding to yours), then post it there & I can delete the copy of THIS one.

Should that go in the DIY "Answers" area?
I'll remove the duplicate of THIS thread that I made earlier.

Alfi, how does that one sound compared to your experience?
