Default Adjusting Valves in 1994 accord ex

Well I adjusted my valves and have a question. I pretty much took took of my valve cover and spark plugs and turned the engine until the valves that i wanted to adjust where pushed up to their highest point. Then I proceeded to gap them according to spec. Now the engine is quieter but I wonder if this method was totally wrong. I noticed that when I turned the power steering pump gear counter clock wise that when the valves reached their peak they stayed there for a few turns before starting to go back down hence my method in adjusting them. Any input would be appreciated thanks.

If you caught the cam at its low point you should be fine. If I am reading your post correctly you verify that you were on the lowest point by finding the area where the cam stays at its lowest point in the profile.

Using the PS pulley to turn the engine, you might have simply seen that the external drive belt slipping.

Minimize that by removing all 4 spark plugs - that way the crankshaft is much easier to move.

There's an arrow on the camshaft sprocket.
pointing to 12:00 oclock = cylinder 1
3:00 = cylinder 3
6:00 = 4
9:00 = 2

In each case the valves for that respective cylinder are not "close" to opening. The engine will turn a ways before they open. Sounds like you were OK.

Measure & adjust with a COLD engine? If the engine was warm, that was wrong.

Yeah I adjusted them with a cold engine and taking the spark plugs as you mentioned made the turning much much easier.
