I think the filter is actually upstream of both AC & heater. But YES, it's a little bit of a pain. Beginning in 2003 that filter is REALLY easy to change.

Changed my filters on the '02 yesterday and it was really a pain especially as a first timer but it seems like it will get easier with time. I swear the folks designing the 6th gens were drunk when they decided the placement for these filters!

I bet the filter was a late change, so they didn't want to re-design the glovebox & make it easier to remove.

I bought some "batting" in the sewing section, at WalMart. Cut to fit the tray and "wala" a new air filter! Yes, it catches a lot of crap that would go somewhere else that you don't want it to go. (03 Accord EX-L)

Some train of thought is that the pleated paper, in itself, is resrictive (sp). Some HVAC guys don't like the pleated paper in your furance! They say the blue fiberglass allows more airflow. The WalMart batting is similar to fiberglass. I'm not really worried about the "allergens" or I wouldn't be outside at all. Just stop the leaves and pineneedles.

I've repaired two cars that had blocked evaporator drains; 94 Accord EX and 94 Jeep Gr. Cherokee. This repair is actually not difficult on an Accord, but on most US vehicles the entire dashboard must be removed. I would not attempt another dashboard removal after tackling the Jeep Gr. Cherokee blocked evaporator, which was also leaking refrigerant. Hands down worst job ever, a nightmare.

Replacing AC filter every year or so sounds like a good investment for a clean, functional AC system.

good luck

Here's your Best Ever Answer from One Who works on them...

Restrictive. Yes. Everything is restrictive, even the grille opening where the air comes in.

But if that restriction doesn't dominate the overall resistance, or the system is designed to operate with that restriction, then it's OK.

If you want to remake the filter like that, more power to you. You seem to understand that you're giving up the ability to filter out fine particulates, like smoke & dust.
