I've noticed that the air conditioner automatically comes on when the defrost or defrost/below buttons are pressed.
I can turn the air off, but I would rather it not come on in the first place.
Can this be done?

If it is like the 04 Elements there is a way to do it, but I don't know if you would want to! I found out about it on the Honda element owners club site and it involved turning the key to accessory, and doing some assortment of other odd things, and I'm not sure if you had to do this every time you wanted to turn off the compressor or not. But there probably is a way, talk to someone at a dealership.

It's a good thing that the compressor comes on with defrost. An AC unit is really just a dehumidifier, dry air defogs windows well. Plus it helps keep oil circulating in the AC system even in the winter months which goes a long way in preventig leaks over time.

Well, MakoMan, I didn't know that running the a/c a bit in winter is good for maintenance. I'll be sure to do that.
I use the defrost vents sometimes because I don't want the hot air blowing in my face or at my feet.
Gooch? It's my nickname from my teenage years, from 'The Gooch', the never-seen bully on the tv show Different Strokes. (I was never a bully. Really.)

Gotcha... That makes sense then.... If you look it up though on www.turdwords.com it comes up as something TOTALLY differnet *LOL*
there should be an A/C button that you can press to turn off the A/C compressor. You turn on the defroster and then press the A/C button to turn the A/C off.
It is by design that the A/C comes on with the defrost as your a/c actually removes moisture from the air.......
