Default Airbag issue

Just purchased a 97 coupe with SRS on. Bag is unplugged cause connectors are not same. What do I have? 77800-SV4-R500
Is there a compatibility chart somewhere? Are all current years same?
Car has some minor bumper damage. How do I know if old bag discharged?
Lots of questions cause I don't know and don't want have my first bag ever to show me how it works.
Thank you if you can share
Don

Previous owner likely purchased a used airbag w/o specifying details (coupe, trim level, engine). All of these details seem to make a difference. It doesn't matter what you have, it's the wrong part or it would mate to your harness connector.

I checked car-part.com and there were plenty of used parts available. I guessed 2dr EX, 4-cyl.

Suggest you use car-part.com to find a local source for your part, and a good body shop to install. Part is <$100.

Given all that we recently discovered about airbags, it's problematic whether a 20 yr old airbag is good or not. However at least the SRS light wil go away. You could purchase a new airbag but it is about $600 (Part 06770-SV4-A51ZA for driver's side, again 2dr EX, 4-cyl).

good luck

I went to a salvage yard and located one. 96 and 97 are apparently the same. I have a LX model. Connector matches. Mechanic told me that a module located under center cool had to be replaced if old bag deployed. Is this true?
I don't know the history. Just want this car to pass inspection. Thanks for your input

The SRS control unit is under the center console (from my 1994 Honda Accord Shop Manual). It does not mention this unit should be replaced due to an accident, but all components (sensors, air bags) must be replaced as indicated and the SRS unit will assess system integrity. Turn keyswitch to On, and SRS light will come on for about 6 secs and go off is all is OK. If not SRS light will stay on and diagnostics must be performed to ID faulty part and replace.

Your 97 Accord is fully obd2 compliant and may be slightly different. However, I'm fairly confident the SRS system is Honda proprietary and Obd2 scans will not reveal anything about SRS system.

good luck

What the mechanic told you was true. 95 and later Accords had different SRS units compared to a 94 Accord (94 Accord SRS units could be re-used after airbag deployment, if no damage to SRS unit).

See this excerpt from Honda Service News issued years ago.

Honda SRS codes on newer Hondas can be read with an OBD-II reader/scanner that have that capability. There are aftermarket reader/scanners with such capability.

I return to salvage yard and got the SRS module out of the same car that we got The airbag from
Mounted it and plug it in same condition SRS still stays on
Cannot start the car waiting on a gas tank There is a yellow cable that goes to the upper right-hand corner of the fuse box containing the two gray wires .cannot get it free from the fuse box to determine if that's where I could reset module. Stuck

The yellow cable harness connector that plugs into the upper right-hand corner of the under-dash fuse box is not the Memory Erase Signal (MES) connector.

The MES connector is separately located behind the driver side kick panel.
