I own a 1995 Honda Accord 2.2L Non-Vtec. My alternator recently stopped charging my battery, and upon inspecting the wires etc, the one that bolts to the alternator is corroded really bad. Like, beyond cleaning. I was wondering, if to replace it, is it a bolt in type thing, or will I have to cut and splice some new wire onto it. I was told that the my alternator has 2 connections. One set of wires with a harness, and the other (the one that bolts onto the alt) was the signal wire. This is the one that's corroded really bad. Also, if anyone could tell me if the corroded wire would stop the alternator from charging, that'd be wonderful.

 

The one that bolts to the Alt is NOT the signal wire, it is the wire that charges the battery.

That is why it is so big.

It goes from the Alternator to the battery.

Have you taken the wire off to clean it yet?

I have never seen the power wire become so corroded that it would not charge the battery.

I suspect alt failure as being more likely the problem.

Take the alt off and bring it to the auto parts store to be tested.

It's actually really bad. I don't know if it's bad enough to stop the charge, but it's pretty beat up. I haven't taken the wire off, yet. I'm going to start on it tomorrow, but a lot of the copper is breaking off at the end where the connector is. I appreciate your reply, thank you. I'm going tomorrow to also get a replacement alt, but I just wanted to replace this wire at the same time since it looked so worn.

 

Fix up that wire first, it might be the entire problem. New alternator might be a waste of money.

 

Just a friendly reminder: As Crispin noted that wire connects to the positive battery terminal. Remove one of the battery terminals or sparks will fly if you inadvertently ground that wire while you're cleaning/repairing it.
