Default Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

Hey Guys,

It is time for me to change the ATF in my car. I also want to change the fluid filter.
According to my owner's manual I only need 3 quarts of fluid. It is kinda hard to believe. So I bought 6 just to be safe.
Is it a pain and I should let a shop do it? Or should I go ahead and do it myself?

Thanks!

These are a "drain and fill" type of thing. So yes at ~3qts you are only getting ~1/3 fresh fluid in the trans.

Not sure of your total set up, but the info I have on the 2010 Accord with a 4 cyl, you just kind of warm up the trans, pull the drain plug - clean it as it will have some "gunk" on it, Put the drain plug back in - a new washer is advised. then refill the fluid to the proper level....done

If you are that worried about it and this is the first change, you could do two "drain and fills" back to back - drive a good few mile between them.

Which one is the filter? Number 4 or 6? And the drain plug washer is the number 18, right?
Thanks a lot!

#4 is the filter. When you remove the old one, note its "position" so you get the new one going in the same direction. Been a while since I changed one, when I got the "new to me" 07 Accord, a new filter and trans fluid change was one of the first things I did since I had no history of it being done and want to set a "base line" going forward.

PS - who won the China F1 race? I fell asleep (started at 2 am here).....ok, I should say I fell back asleep sine I had to wake up to catch the start....and then haven't had a chance to look online for the winner/placings.

Hamilton beat Vettel by a few seconds, Verstappen got third. It was an action packed race. Looks like we have an exciting year ahead of us finally.

Yeah that is why I want to change it also. Had the car for a year now and I figure surely it will be a good and cheap investment.

Dang, now I'm even more upset I fell back asleep.

Yes, set the base line. Not sure of the miles/KM on the car now but doing it now will let you rest knowing when it was last done. There is no real "service" time for the filter, I'm going to go with at least 60K miles (you'll have to translate) if not to 100K. I have OCD about the auto trans fluid in mine and like to have that changed/drain and fill at least every 40K.

Yeah, I always keep an eye on the ATF level. The owners manual says to change it every 40K kms if you put hard miles on the car... I assume that means city miles and change it every 80k kms if you drive mostly on the highway. My car has about 90K kms on it, so might as well do it now. (not sure what the previous owner did to it)
