Default AZ Mechanics, Pls Read

So the wife's car has been running like poo and from the smell, hesitation, and mpg's I have concluded that it is either the cat or O2 sensor. The cel is on and has been pulled before and it stated either O2 sensor or clogged cat. My wife talked to some people today that said because her car came from Maine it's O2 sensor is not proper for Arizona. These people are not mechanics but said that they had the same problem and that their O2 sensors were not calibrated for AZ. I, honestly, have never heard of a such a thing and I find it very hard to believe. Is it possible that in AZ people use a different O2 Sensor? Why? I hope someone can enlighten me about this. By the way, my wife's car is an 01 VW Jetta 1.8 turbo and we run mid-grade fuel.
Thanks for any help.

I've never heard of anything like that. Closest I've heard is some California cars with different engines (LEV vs. ULEV) & occasionally different sensors because of the different engine.

Call the dealer parts department & ask? They can probably look in their EPC whether there's multiple part #s for different parts of the world.
