Default background light on instrument panel problem!

on my 94 honda accord the back lights for the instrument panel dont come on at all, the little lights for D/N/R/D1 or for the E.brake/seatbelt etc come on but the background lights dont work! and I just tried another instrument panel and checked the bulbs and no thats not the problem either, also checked fuses and they are all good aswell!!

anybody know where else I need to look at?

anyhelp appreciated

Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm having the same problem. None of my fuses are blown, and along with the instrument panel, the lights for the enviromental controls aren't working either.

I know this is a silly question but did you test your dimmer control yet?

Yea I'm afraid so. I did some reasearch about the problem, and it seems that it's more common than you'd think. The same symptoms happens to people when they are installing head units and mess up the dimmer wire. So I've narrowed the problem down to either the dimmer switch relay or the multiplex unit.

i have the same problem on mine, except my entire instrument cluster is messed up! someone suggested that it may be a bulb blown. check to see if that is the problem

I wish it were that simple. I changed out the bulbs and even the instrument panel with a known good one, and no luck. It's something to do with the car's electrical system. I'm just not sure exactly which part of the system it is.

I had a similar problem myself...I ended up bypassing the dimmer switch with a small jump wire, ending up with the cluster at full brightness, which is not really too bright, so it worked great! good luck!

Default background light on instrument panel problem

this seems like a waste to me, I just bought a 4 pack but first of all they are tiny so of course theyre light its only 8.5 oz but the worst part is they still have 5grams of fat in this little tiny serving I mean come on WTF? this is the best they could do???

Thanks I'll look into that. I finally have time today to attempt to figure out which overpriced part has gone out on me. I'm going to check the multiplex control unit and the dimmer switch. I'll be sure to post the results.

Just yesterday someone posted a procedure to re-boot the multiplexer.

Key OFF.
Set intermittent wiper control to middle setting.
Turn on the car.

(seems simple, don't know if it works, but it sure can't hurt)
