how can i tell if auto transmission fluid is bad? what does burnt transmission fluid smell like?

 

bad fluid is a very dark red that's hard to see through (instead of that translucent red). It can even be a dark brown or tan if it's really bad. It may have a burnt toasty smell if it has been burning, otherwise I'm sure what other smell it would have.
