Default Blown fuses

Hello all,

My daughter bought a 1989 Accord DX that has many issues. The first I would like help with is when you turn on the park lights it immediately blows the fuse. I can't find any obvious causes, and have looked it over as much as I can see. She has a Chiltons book but the wiring diagram is incomplete and does not show the head light system. The headlights do work.

Which fuse is blowing?

You can download an 86-89 shop manual from the spooner link I posted in the online manuals thread in the DIY section.

That site doesn't have up the shop manual for download that I referenced. Plus there isn't a great wiring diagram in it either. So I don't know everything that fuse protects. With the fuse removed, see if any of the front lights are not working.

The best advice I can give you is to unplug all of the electrical connectors from the taillights (plus any lights up front that are not working with the fuse removed) to isolate the wiring from the combination light switch to the tail lights. Put in a new fuse. Turn key to II position. Turn on the tail lights.

If the fuse blows with everything disconnected, then I would guess that the combination switch (or the wiring) is at fault.

If the fuse remains intact, turn key off, plug in one of the connectors, repeat test until you find the source of the short.

Check the wire for shaving through and touching the body somewhere. Might have to ohm out the wire to check for short to ground.

PA has you on they way. I will say from my experience, make sure the bulb sockets are dry and not rusted...more than likly you are going to find they are wet and there is water in the tail lights.....right/pass rear will be my guess, at least from three of my 3rd gens (87-89).

Ok thanks I will start there. I was able to get the manual down loaded and it has a better diagram than the Chiltons manual.
