Default "Brake Lamp" indicator stays ON the Dashboard (02 accord 177K miles)

Hey guys, I have a Honda accord w/177k miles on it. Tonight on the way home from work the "brake lamp" indicator ( NOT the brake light) came so I had my wife check the tail lights when I parked the car. The brake lights seem to light when I hit the brakes based on what she saw.

Should I start changing the brake lights to fix this problem? I guess I am asking how to go about diagnosing this issue. Should I take off all tail and brake lights and inspects them. How many lights are in the back besides the Reverse lights?

Any suggestion would be highly appreciated

This happened to me on my '94 and it was the brake light that is in the back window. If that's not it, start checking all the lights.

That warning lamp goes off based on the wattage of the bulbs.

Sometimes when a bulb is getting ready to fail, it FIRST changes wattage (gets brighter or dimmer) before it burns out.

Try removing all the bulbs & cleaning the contacts in the bulb sockets. That can affect the wattage.

Sometimes people have had to replace all the bulbs back there just so they match each other.

#22 is the sensor for this warning lamp. If nothing else helps, maybe that sensor is bad?
